Automated Checker Rules vs. Manual Checklist

While our automated USCIS validator validates structural files and metadata parameters, there are several photographic qualities you must verify manually before submission.

What we check automatically

  • Square Aspect Ratio: Validates if the image width matches the height exactly (1:1 ratio).
  • Pixel Dimensions: Checks if the image resolution satisfies the 600x600 px to 1200x1200 px limit.
  • File Compression: Ensures the exported JPEG format is under the U.S. State Department 240 KB boundary.
  • File Header Signatures: Confirms the container format is a standard JPEG configuration.

What you must check manually

  • Glasses and Accessories: Ensure you are not wearing glasses (even transparent medical lenses) or heavy jewelry.
  • Eyes and Sightlines: Eyes must be open, clearly visible, and looking straight forward at the camera lens.
  • Background Consistency: Check for shadows behind the neck, ears, or shoulders, and confirm a white/off-white background.
  • Neutral Expression: Mouth must be closed with no smiling, frowning, or squinting.
