Taking your photo at home is convenient, but you must follow exact photographic guidelines to prevent the U.S. State Department system from automatically rejecting your registration.

Natural Daylighting

Stand directly facing a window. Natural daylight falls evenly across your face, avoiding background shadows or shadows under your eyes and nose.

Maintain Proper Distance

Position the camera lens about 1.5 to 2 meters (5 to 7 feet) away. Avoid digital zoom as it adds noise and decreases image sharpness.

Wear Casual Dark Clothes

Wear normal daily clothes. Do not wear white (which blends into the background) or uniforms. Religious attire is permitted only if worn daily.

Neutral Facial Expression

Look directly at the camera with both eyes open. Keep a neutral expression with a closed mouth—smiling widely or showing teeth is not allowed.
